2 Grades to Stay Together in New School Program

A new program designed to help students at Sycamore Elementary School learn to work together will keep 20 kindergartners and 20 first-graders together through the second grade.

The Family of Learners program involves three instructors. The students now in Ann Cogan’s kindergarten class will move to Brenda Alban’s first-grade class next year, and the following year to Beth Hondorp’s second-grade class.

The theory is that students who know each other better learn better. Sycamore teachers also hope the program will reduce the time instructors spend each fall getting to know students.

Cogan, Alban and Hondorp already share information on students and curriculum and will be familiar with each student’s strengths, weaknesses and personality, Sycamore Principal Sherry LaCost said.

Eventually, LaCost hopes to include all Sycamore classes. She said the program costs nothing to run.
