Hamblin Is Promoted at Alma Mater
Pat Hamblin has been hired to coach boys’ basketball at Village Christian High.
Hamblin, a graduate of Village Christian who coached the junior varsity last season, succeeds Brian Gibson, who stepped down to spend more time with his family.
Gibson retains his position as baseball coach and will assist Hamblin in basketball.
SOCCER
Fast forward: Federico Arroyo, a forward on the Cal State Northridge men’s team, was selected NCAA Division I Independent player of the week.
Arroyo, a graduate of Van Nuys High, had two goals and an assist during the week. The Matadors extended their winning streak to five games, longest in more than a decade.
GOLF
In the open: J.T. Kohut, a senior at Westlake High, will play as an amateur in the Nike Tour Inland Empire Open beginning today at Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Club.
Kohut, 18, shot five-over-par 77 in a qualifying tournament Monday at Sun Lakes Country Club in Banning and was the third alternate. He received a phone call Wednesday notifying him three players had withdrawn.
This will be his first professional tournament.
POOL
A pocketful: Kim Kirby of Burbank qualified for the Camel 8-Ball Classic Championship by winning an amateur regional competition last weekend in Las Vegas.
The 8-Ball Classic, conducted by the American Poolplayers Assn., is scheduled for April 22-24 at Las Vegas Riviera Hotel and Casino.

Jumping in: Sign-ups are being taken for Dive Thousand Oaks, a year-round program for boys and girls 7-16.

MISCELLANY
Conference call: The Black Sports Agents Assn.’s second annual sports conference is today through Sunday at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Los Angeles.
The event features seminars and workshops that address issues affecting sports management and athletic representation.
Cost is $215 for BSAA members and $250 for nonmembers. Registration begins today at 2:30 p.m.
