Swissair Recovery Effort Stepped Up
Investigators are summoning a heavy-lift barge to scoop up as much wreckage as possible of Swissair Flight 111 before winter storms arrive that could scatter crucial evidence. All human remains of the 229 victims of the crash that divers can recover without risking injury to themselves have been recovered. Crash investigators said more human remains will probably be recovered when larger pieces of the airliner are brought to the surface. Remains of 78 victims have been identified using dental records, fingerprints, X-rays and DNA testing. Forensic laboratories were able to recognize DNA patterns for 204 of the victims, but identification of all the victims could take several months.
