Masters of the house? The Padres are not that. They share Qualcomm Stadium during football season with the Chargers and San Diego State, another reason they hope voters will approve funding for a baseball-only facility. An 8 p.m. game tonight between the Aztecs and Hawaii has Padre General Manager Kevin Towers concerned about field conditions for Saturday’s Game 3.

Citing the aesthetic--and athletic--importance, Towers said, “We have an opportunity to put San Diego on the baseball map and who knows what the field will look like? Who knows if we’ll have to spray-paint part of the outfield? You don’t see this at Yankee Stadium or Jacobs Field. Thank God the Chargers don’t play on Sunday or we could be boxed between pro and college football. They might be tearing down the goal posts while we’re trying to take batting practice.”

The turnaround time of 10-12 hours in field preparation will prevent the Braves, traveling from Atlanta this morning, from working out this afternoon. The Padres will conduct an optional workout at noon.

Said Atlanta Manager Bobby Cox, “It’s not that important. We were on that field not too long ago.”
