No. 2 Warriors Knock Off No. 1

Adriana Hockicko played doubles for the first time this season and her sweep helped Woodbridge, ranked second in the county, defeat No. 1 Corona del Mar, 10-8, in a Sea View League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Corona del Mar.

Hockicko, who normally plays No. 2 singles for the Warriors, teamed with April Artunian for a 6-2, 6-0, 6-3 sweep. Danielle Husted and Natalie Mitton also swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, for Woodbridge (10-0, 3-0 in league), which won eight of nine doubles sets.

Nadia Vaughan swept in singles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, for Corona del Mar (7-2, 2-1), which also was beaten by Palos Verdes Peninsula, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I.

In other Sea View League matches:

No. 5 Newport Harbor 17, El Toro 1--Audra Adams and Natalie Braverman didn’t lose a game in singles to lead visiting Newport Harbor (8-5, 2-2).

Santa Margarita 11, Irvine 7--Kate Klimkowski and Laura Bonhall swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Santa Margarita (7-4, 2-2).

In the Century League:

Canyon 10, Foothill 8--In the third round, Canyon broke open a 6-6 tie, with a sweep in singles and a tie-break victory from Lisa Choi and Christine Huey in doubles.

Heather Hohenstein won, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, for visiting Canyon (4-8, 3-1).

Emily Hardy and Kelly Lawson won in doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) for Foothill (4-8, 2-2).

Villa Park 12, El Modena 6--Tina Pattara and Kristen Lawson swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Villa Park (5-5, 4-0). El Modena is 4-3, 2-2).

In the Empire League:

No. 9 El Dorado 10 1/2, No. 10 Cypress 10 1/2 (El Dorado wins on games, 77-70)--Nicole Mantegna won in singles, 6-2 and teamed with Dina Kuan to win, 6-1, 6-4, in doubles for visiting El Dorado (12-2, 5-0). Cypress is 11-1, 4-1.

In the Freeway League:

No. 6 Troy 18, Fullerton 0--Stacey Lee, Aya Sakoda and Karen Eitan didn’t lose a game in singles for visiting Troy (11-0, 4-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 8 Laguna Hills 15, Aliso Niguel 3--Trisha Lee and Jessica Prause didn’t lose a game in singles for host Laguna Hills (9-2, 4-0) and Megan Davies and Jamie Lautenschleger also shut out their opponents in doubles.

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 Mater Dei 15, Mission Viejo 3--The Monarchs swept in singles, losing only three games, led by Melissa Esmero, who won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. Mater Dei is 8-2, 3-0.

San Clemente 11, Trabuco Hills 7--Sarah and Shawna Melton swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for host San Clemente (4-7, 1-2).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 12, Marina 6--Sophomore Kelly Six swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 37-2 for the visiting Aztecs (10-3, 3-1).
