Six sheriff’s deputies and a suspect became sick Friday after breathing chemicals at an apparent methamphetamine laboratory, authorities said.

The deputies were assisting in a drug arrest around 10 a.m. at an apartment in the 10800 block of Elliot Avenue when one of them accidentally knocked over an unknown chemical, said Mark Tolbert, a county fire inspector.

Tolbert said that after the chemical burned a hole through the floor and released an odor, a county hazardous materials team was called, and buildings around the apartment complex were evacuated.

All six deputies were able to return to duty later in the day, officials said.

Five suspects were arrested in the raid on the suspected drug laboratory, sheriff’s Sgt. Vincent Callier said.
