5.3 Quake Jolts Lake Tahoe Area
A moderately strong earthquake rocked the North Shore of Lake Tahoe early Friday morning, awakening residents and casino guests and causing light damage. There were no injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the 1:53 a.m. quake at magnitude 5.3 and placed the epicenter 5 miles northeast of King’s Beach on Lake Tahoe. It was on the California side of the border, 18 miles southwest of Reno.
Sheriff’s officers in Truckee and Tahoe City said damage was confined to broken windows in some homes and some smashed household possessions and store merchandise.
