Friends and fellow surfers will hold a “paddle out” memorial service today for John F. “Jack” Denny, founder of World Jungle Clothing Co., who died last week after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was 33.

Denny, a Laguna Beach resident, launched World Jungle in Costa Mesa in 1990. In January, he sold the surfwear business to another clothing company, 26 Red in Irvine, which continues to market the line under the World Jungle name.

Before launching his business, Denny was a designer for Gotcha International in Irvine.

At the time of his death, Denny was engaged to be married to Laguna Beach resident Rani Christensen. He is survived by his mother, Marlene Mayer of Laguna Beach; his father, Charles M. Denny of Coto de Caza; and brothers Chuck and Brad Denny of Laguna Beach.

Denny will be honored at his favorite surfing spot, Rockpile, off Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. Following a brief seaside service at 5 p.m., friends will paddle out on their surfboards to complete the memorial and scatter Denny’s ashes.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Surfrider Foundation in memory of Jack Denny, 1222 S. El Camino Real, Suite 67, San Clemente, CA 92672.
