A fire caused about $80,000 damage to a restaurant early Monday, authorities said.

The fire, apparently caused by grease, broke out about 8:20 a.m. at Via Maria restaurant, in the 9900 block of Walker Street, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Garry Layman said.

Employees of the restaurant, which was closed, tried to fight the blaze before firefighters arrived, Layman said.

Twenty-six firefighters had the flames under control at 8:54 a.m., he said.

The blaze affected mainly the kitchen, causing about $50,000 damage to the structure and $30,000 to the contents, Layman said.
