Peace Effort Fails; Fighting Escalates

Fierce fighting raged around the headquarters of rebels fighting Congolese President Laurent Kabila as a regional summit in Mauritius ended without a truce being brokered. The fighting in and around the eastern town of Goma, where the rebels launched their revolt last month, eased later in the day with the guerrillas claiming victory. But Congolese state television reported in Kinshasa that forces loyal to Kabila had taken the town of Kibumba on the outskirts of Goma and were advancing on Goma itself.
