USC might be in a pickle at center.

Coach Paul Hackett just hopes it isn’t a repeat of the 1978 Arizona State game, when the injury-ravaged No. 2 Trojans used three centers and fumbled six snaps in a 20-7 upset loss.

The current crisis is that Matt McShane, the starter in the San Diego State game, twisted his left knee in practice Tuesday.

Eric Denmon, who started against Purdue, already was on the sidelines wearing a brace on his severely sprained left ankle.

Denmon is probably out for Saturday. Hackett will have to wait and see about McShane’s injury.

Next up is David Pratchard, a backup guard who recently has been practicing at center, then Jason Grain, a starting guard. Starting tackle Brent McCaffrey also has played center.

Linebacker Mark Cusano lasted only four plays against San Diego State and his ankle injury is a serious concern. “He’s retreating rather than progressing,” Hackett said. . . . Tailback Chad Morton didn’t practice Tuesday. “Slight illness,” Morton said. Retorted receiver Billy Miller: “It’s called superstarism.” . . . Safety Grant Pearsall, who missed Saturday’s game because of a sprained knee, resumed practicing.
