Teacher Kendig Gets County Music Award
A Capistrano Unified School District teacher is the recipient of the 1998 Encore Award, naming him the county’s music teacher of the year.
Bob Kendig has taught instrumental music in the district’s elementary and middle schools for 27 years.
“I’ve always believed that every child deserves a music education, and I feel so fortunate to be in a district that is very supportive of the arts,” he said.
The Encore Award is given annually by the Orange County Music and Arts Administrators to a teacher who “demonstrates a high level of expertise in the music classroom, motivates students and shares this knowledge of music with others in the field.”
A high number of Kendig’s elementary school students pursue music in middle school, district officials said.
He is a recipient of the Los Angeles Music Center’s Bravo Award, and in 1992 he was selected by his peers as the Capistrano Unified elementary-school teacher of the year.
“He stands for all that is right with the education of youngsters, and I can think of no one more deserving of the Encore Award,” said Scott Young, principal at Moulton Elementary School in Laguna Niguel.
