Aspiring Teen Politicians Sought for Essay Contest

High school students who have dreamed of becoming politicians now have a chance to say what’s on their minds.

Those living in the state Senate’s 21st District can enter an essay contest by completing the statement, “If I were a state senator, I would . . .”

The contest is sponsored by Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), who said he hopes to read about students’ concerns on politics, education and their communities.

“It would be interesting to see what they would do if they were in my shoes, because some day one of them will be,” Schiff said.

Essays must be no longer than 500 words, typed and double-spaced. Entries must be received in Schiff’s office by 5 p.m. April 30, and must include the student’s name, home address, phone number and school.

Essays may be mailed or hand-delivered to Schiff’s office at 35 S. Raymond Ave., Suite 205, Pasadena 91105; or faxed to (626) 793-5803.

Schiff’s district covers the Valley communities of Burbank, Glendale, Sunland-Tujunga and Sun Valley.

Five top winners will be flown to Sacramento to visit the state Capitol and watch the Legislature in session.
