Highland Has That Golden Look

Maybe it was the anger of not making the playoffs last year. Or the embarrassment of finishing fourth in the Golden League.

Whatever it was, Highland High made sure it would have a say in the league race this season, thumping Quartz Hill, 15-8, 15-6, 8-15, 15-12, on Wednesday night in a boys’ volleyball match at Quartz Hill.

Highland (7-0, 3-0 in league play), which didn’t make the playoffs last season for the first time in the seven-year history of the program, looked like a league champion.

“That’s the best volleyball I’ve seen us play in two years,” Coach Mike Bird said.

Adam Green had 17 kills and 17 digs, including eight kills and eight digs in the fourth game for Highland, ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times.

Outside hitter Brandan Butchart had 30 kills for No. 3-ranked Quartz Hill (9-1, 2-1).

Jared Corpening, a transfer from Highland, had 10 kills and 11 hitting errors for Quartz Hill.
