Matadors’ James Out for Season

Nancy James of Cal State Northridge, who won the women’s 800 meters and mile in the Big Sky Conference indoor track and field championships in February, will redshirt this season after injuring tissue next to her shin bone.

James, who has one year of eligibility left and helped the Matadors win the Big Sky indoor title with a meet-record 165 points, hadn’t raced during the outdoor season.

CROSS-COUNTRY

* Junior Ruben Ruiz of Birmingham High will not be eligible to represent the school in any athletic events until Sept. 1, Coach Scott King said Thursday.

Ruiz was the 1997 City Section freshman-sophomore cross-country champion for Chatsworth, but his transfer last fall was ruled too late to make him eligible for the 1998-99 school year.

BASEBALL

* First baseman Jon Bringuier and pitcher Peter Tuber of Granada Hills High will make their musical television debut Saturday when they play a guitar duet on Valley Sports 2, the Time Warner Co. weekly sports show that airs at 8:30 a.m. on ESPN2 in the West San Fernando Valley.

* Girls’ sports coaches at Crescenta Valley High will throw out the first pitch for the Crescenta Valley-Arcadia baseball game at 7 tonight at Stengel Field in Glendale as part of girls’ athletic day.

GOLF

* The Cal State Northridge women’s team has signed Katherine Pareja of Saguaro High in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Susan Pelletier of San Luis Obispo High.

Pareja, a native of Ecuador, is completing her third year at Saguaro, which has won two consecutive state championships. Pelletier has played on Northern League championship teams three years in a row.

VOLLEYBALL

* The Pierce College men’s team plays South Coast Conference rival Santa Barbara in the state semifinals at 8 tonight at Long Beach City.

Pierce (12-4), fourth in the state last season, won its second consecutive conference title. Golden West and Grossmont play in the other semifinal at 6. The winners meet for the state title Saturday night at 7 at Long Beach City.

HONORS

* Ten Cal State Northridge athletes have been selected to the Big Sky Conference all-academic team for 1998-99.

Athletes honored include: Neda Milic (women’s basketball), Brad Hegemier, John Greene, Nick Hamlin and Javier Ramirez (men’s track), and Andrea Bruins, Jennifer Capehart, Nancy James, Jennifer Overlook and Desiree Woodman (women’s track).
