Centennial’s Toussaint Long on Home Runs

Andrew Toussaint of Compton Centennial hit home runs in six consecutive games before his streak ended Tuesday in an Ocean League game against South Torrance.

Toussaint, a junior catcher, walked and grounded out in a 10-0, five-inning defeat that put Centennial at 5-3 in league play with six games left in the regular season.

Toussaint, 6 feet 2 and 150 pounds, has 11 homers and 42 runs batted in--numbers that harken memories of former Centennial standouts Reggie Smith, Lenny Randle and Lonnie Smith.

“[South Torrance] pitched around me, but before that I was getting some good pitches to hit and I just let my mechanics take over,” Toussaint said.

Jennifer Jenkins of Boron High helped pitch the Bobcats into a potential date with state softball history when she threw a no-hitter--her fourth this season--in a 14-0 Desert Mountain League victory over Trona last Friday.

The victory gave Boron 75 consecutive league victories, eclipsing the mark of 74 set by Mission Hills Alemany in 1983, according to the Cal-Hi Sports record book.

Boron, however, will have competition to finish the season with a state mark.

Oakland Skyline also entered the week with a 75-game winning streak in league.

Boron, 14-0 and ranked No. 1 in Division IV, began the week with seven league games remaining. Skyline only has five. However, because the Oakland Athletic League also comprises the Oakland Section of the California Interscholastic Federation, the games Skyline plays in its league playoffs will count as part of its streak.

Both teams’ league winning streaks are likely to be at 82 at the beginning of next season.

Skyline’s streak will be listed with an asterisk because it includes victories in league playoffs.
