Cruise Lines Agree to Report Crimes
Most cruise ships sailing out of U.S. ports now have to report all crimes at sea to the FBI under a policy announced last week by the industry.
The action, covering about 90% of the North American cruise industry, followed the disclosure last month that Carnival crew members were accused of sexual assault against passengers and other crew 108 times in a five-year period. They were the first crime statistics released by a cruise line. Previously, the cruise lines left it up to the victims to report a crime once back in port.
Under the new policy, cruise lines will report on-board crimes if a ship calls on U.S. ports or if the offense involves Americans. It was unanimously approved by the 16 members of the International Council of Cruise Lines.
