Rogers Agrees to Terms With Suns

The Phoenix Suns have agreed to contract terms with free-agent forward Rodney Rogers, who was with the Clippers last season, the Suns announced Monday.

The contract has not been signed, but Rogers will receive the new $2-million exception allowed to teams this year under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.

The deal is for three years, with the final season at the player’s option.

“We were trying to work out a sign-and-trade deal but it didn’t look like the Clippers were going to get anything done,” agent Bill Strickland said. “So we made this decision in a fluid market.”

The Lakers’ recruitment of free-agent power forward Charles Oakley is scheduled to begin quickly and intensely today.

Oakley not only has meetings scheduled all day with executives Jerry West and Mitch Kupchak--including a tour of the Staples Center site--but Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant plan visits with the 35-year-old veteran in the afternoon, sources said Monday.

Oakley, who played for the Toronto Raptors last season and has drawn interest from numerous teams, also was urged to sign with the Lakers on Monday by part-owner Magic Johnson during Johnson’s charity golf tournament.
