IRVINE
Construction of the Guideway Demonstration Project, a transit system connecting John Wayne Airport with the Irvine Business Complex, will cost between $130 million and $146 million, officials learned Wednesday during a meeting of the Irvine Transportation Authority’s finance commission. City officials will need to come up with $11 million to $31 million, depending on the eventual size of the rail system.
One possible source of that money is selling advertising on the side of the train cars. “It’s just like purchasing an ad in the newspaper,” Mayor Christina L. Shea said. “There are so many high-tech companies here that could get their name on a train car and be identified with the transit system.”
Another possible money source could be the adoption of an official city soft drink, as happened recently in Huntington Beach and Garden Grove, Shea said, adding that a deal could bring Irvine several million dollars.
