Digital Entertainment Appoints Former Microsoft Exec to Tech Post

* Digital Entertainment Network Inc., a closely held Santa Monica-based Internet entertainment site for teens and young adults, said it named Microsoft Corp.’s former Internet tools development director, Greg Carpenter, as chief technology officer.

Digital Entertainment said Carpenter is known for his expertise in broadband and digital distribution of music. He spent the last six years developing imaging and graphic software at Microsoft.

The company said Carpenter will help lead its drive to connect its den.net (https://www.den.net) Web page to teens and young adults ages 14 to 24. Digital Entertainment’s site shows videos, including music and sports, designed to attract a young audience.

* Irwin Naturals/4Health Inc., a Culver City-based maker and supplier of herbal and nutritional supplements, has restructured its finance department and has appointed Corey Fischer as its chief financial officer. Fischer, who was CFO of K-Tel International, replaces Dan Martin. No reason was cited for Martin’s departure. The company also named John Foster controller.

* Smart & Final Inc., a Los Angeles-based operator of grocery warehouse stores, has appointed William E. Macfarlane as senior vice president and chief information officer, responsible for all of the company’s technology applications and operations. He previously did technology consulting for a unit of Arthur Andersen.
