Santa Ana Police Find Meth-Lab Components in Abandoned Van

Police officers making routine checks in Santa Ana on Tuesday discovered components of a methamphetamine lab in a van on West Russell Avenue, authorities said.

Though fumes were leaking from the equipment, the situation was not serious enough to warrant an evacuation of the neighborhood, Santa Ana Fire Chief Jim Dalton said. As a precaution, residents were told to stay inside their houses during the cleanup, which began shortly after 1 p.m. and lasted into the evening.

“It was typical homemade brew,” Dalton said, “Once it gets unstable, they abandon it.”

The Fire Department’s hazardous-materials team took the chemicals from the van for disposal by a private company, he said.
