School’s Landmark Gym Damaged by Fire
The landmark octagonal Blair High School gymnasium will be out of action for three to six months following a fire over the weekend that caused $500,000 in damage, school officials said Monday.
Three dozen firefighters worked for an hour to bring the flames under control, said Duncan Baird, a Pasadena Fire Department battalion chief. The two-story gym stands separate from the main school at 1201 S. Marengo Ave.
An investigation is continuing into the cause of the fire, which destroyed the gym’s hardwood floor and some benches and damaged locker rooms beneath the main floor as it swept through the gym shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. Arson is not believed to be a factor, Baird said.
It will take three to six months to restore the gym, according to Mark Guthienz, Pasadena Unified School District director.
