Patrolman Shot on I-5 Released From Hospital
The California Highway Patrol officer who was shot during a traffic stop in San Clemente was released from the hospital Saturday.
He is “is in good spirits and resting and recuperating at home,” a department spokeswoman said.
Investigators continued to search for the driver of a red Toyota Tacoma pickup that patrolman Gary L. Burnett stopped for speeding on Interstate 5. But officials came up with no new leads Saturday, Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said.
Authorities are still searching for a bumper and license plate that were stolen from a truck in Dana Point and are similar to those used by the gunman, Amormino said. The bumper was taken from a white 1998 Toyota.
The shooting occurred during Wednesday’s morning rush hour. Burnett’s right arm was shattered by a bullet. Another bullet struck Burnett in the chest and was stopped by his armored vest.
