City officials will ask for council approval next month for the Traffic Stop Sign Enclosures program. The program calls for 3-by-2-foot storage boxes, each containing four stand-up stop signs, to be placed at about 25 intersections throughout the city. The stop signs would be easily accessible and are to be used if traffic signals become disabled in the event of a power failure or other emergency.

Tom Levene, a city public works inspector, developed the idea as part of the city’s Y2K planning effort. The City Council was initially enthusiastic about the concept and budgeted $75,000 to implement the idea.
