VALLEY ROUNDUP : North Hills : Prosecutors Seek to Try Boy as Adult in Student’s Slaying
Prosecutors took initial steps Friday to have a 15-year-old tried as an adult in the slaying of a Monroe High School student last month.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Alan Yochelson, who heads the Sylmar office, said murder charges and a petition for a fitness hearing were filed Friday against the teen, whom he did not name because of his age.
The teen is one of two people accused in the fatal shooting of Giovanni Avelar, 17, as he walked home from school. Avelar, who shunned gangs, was killed July 21 in the 9000 block of Langdon Avenue.
