Green Expected at Center’s Opening

New Dodger outfielder Shawn Green and former Dodger manager Tom Lasorda are expected to be among the guests for the opening Sunday of the Ferne Milken Youth & Sports Complex on the campus of the Bernard Milken Jewish Community Center in West Hills.

A grand opening for the public is scheduled from 2-5 p.m.

The $4.5 million facility includes a basketball gymnasium, teen center, multi-purpose facility and houses the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

The campus is located at 22622 Vanowen Street. Free parking is available at the northwest end of Fallbrook Mall, where a shuttle service will run continually between the lot and campus.

FOOTBALL

* Will Svitek, a 6-6, 230-pound tight end and defensive end from Newbury Park, has committed to Stanford.

* Cal Lutheran offensive lineman Tony Weak has been been selected to the American Football Coaches Association Division III all-star team that will represent the United States against Mexico in the 1999 Aztec Bowl on Dec. 18 in Mexico City.

BASEBALL

* Kurt Birkins, former All-City pitcher at El Camino Real High, has joined the Conquistadores as an assistant coach.

* The Falcon Baseball Camp for boys and girls ages 10-14 will be held Dec. 27-28 at Stengel Field in Glendale. Cost is $55. Information: (818) 249-5871.

BASKETBALL

* The American Roundball Corp. Junior Academy is holding registration for boys and girls 6 to 8 Sunday at 3 p.m. at North Hollywood High. ARC will hold a camp for boys and girls in grades 1-10 from Dec. 20-23. Information: (818) 995-3761.

WATER POLO

* Goalie Lloyd Masson of La Canada was named the Southern Section Division III most valuable player.

MISCELLANY

* The Lancaster JetHawks will begin accepting letters of request for their dugout teams for the 2000 season on Jan. 3.

Dugout teams, comprised of players from youth baseball and softball leagues, appear on the field before the game with the JetHawks and receive 20 complimentary tickets to the game.

Requests need to include name of team, name and phone number for contact person for the team and the name of the youth organization.
