Seizure Likely Cause of Student’s Death

County medical examiners say the Cal Lutheran University student found dead in his dorm room Sunday probably suffered a seizure, but it will be weeks before the coroner’s office has the results of tissue sample and toxicology tests that pinpoint the cause of death.

The student has been identified as Ryan Jones, 22, a transfer student from a college in San Diego.

The coroner will hold off revealing the cause of death until the lab results come back, said Senior Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens.

Jones had a history of seizures and was taking anti-seizure medication, Stevens said.

There was no evidence that Jones had been using any other drugs, he said.

“There’s nothing to indicate this is anything more than an unfortunate natural occurrence,” Stevens said.

A Cal Lutheran spokeswoman said Jones was in his first semester at the school after transferring from Palomar College.

He was found about 3:45 p.m. Sunday by his roommate, officials said.

“We’re a small campus,” the spokeswoman said. “Everybody feels it.”
