Unidentified Man Struck and Killed on Costa Mesa Freeway
An unidentified man was struck and killed by a Jeep early Sunday morning as he ran across the Costa Mesa Freeway in an apparent effort to get help after crashing his car.
The man, driving a 1986 Chevrolet Spectrum, collided with a road sign at the Lincoln Avenue offramp in Anaheim, sending his car into a ditch, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said. The man had been trying to make his way from the Costa Mesa Freeway to the Riverside Freeway, CHP officers believe.
All southbound lanes were closed from shortly after the 1 a.m. accident until 4:42 a.m. while the fatal collision was investigated.
The Orange County coroner’s office said late Sunday that they were still tracking down the man’s identity.
“We’re still working on it,” Deputy Coroner Cullen Ellingburgh said. “We’re working some leads, but they are only leads.”
Anyone who saw the accident is asked to call the CHP at (949) 223-5454.
