Five police officers were killed and at least 14 wounded in separate militant attacks Monday on a security headquarters and a police patrol in the troubled Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

“So far we have received information that four police personnel were killed and more than 12 others were wounded when militants stormed the SOG 1/8Special Operations Group 3/8 headquarters,” a police official said.

The SOG is the anti-insurgency arm of the Jammu and Kashmir police. Its headquarters were attacked in the provincial summer capital, Srinagar.

Earlier Monday, one police officer was killed and two were wounded when separatists fired on a patrol, also in Srinagar, police said.

The official said the army had laid siege to the SOG camp, where an unknown number of militants were holding out.

Residents of the area said they could hear intermittent firing and explosions.

The Harkat Moujahedeen militant group claimed responsibility for the attack on the security headquarters.
