Stallone Tries to Act the Part of a Golfer

Seeing Sylvester Stallone with a club in his hand should not come as a surprise. In Hollywood, it’s called typecasting.

But a golf club?

And yet here he is, in the Sporting Life, striding across the magazine pages in these natty--OK, ludicrous--plus fours and delivering golfing wisdom to all.

Stallone claims a handicap of “probably between eight and nine, now,” and golf seems to have given him another dimension-- a sense of humor.

Asked his idea of a perfect golf day, he answered: “No injuries.”

Queried about compliments he might have received about his game, he quoted tutors Jim McLean and David Leadbetter.

“They’ve always been very complimentary about my form. ‘You have nice golf clothes,’ I think is what they said. ‘He dresses well for a golfer.’ That’s the best I can hope for.”

Trivia time: U.S. soccer standout Michelle Akers last week became the fourth woman to score 100 goals for her country. How many men have achieved that feat?

Man in black: Greg Johns, a columnist for the Eastside Journal in Bellevue, Wash., commenting on alleged recruiting violations at Washington:

“At every public appearance he’s made since arriving in Seattle three weeks ago, new Husky football Coach Rick Neuheisel has been dressed all in black, from his overcoat to his shoes.

“Yesterday, he added a black eye to the wardrobe.”

Fighting words: After the Chicago Bears named Dick Jauron, a Yale graduate, as coach, the “stuffed shirt” jokes were not far behind.

Now, columnist Phil Hersch of the Chicago Tribune--not to mention Yale, class of ‘68-- has hit back.

“Those of us who have been graduated from a university founded while Chicago still was a swampy trading post must take umbrage,” Hersch wrote.

“At our 25th reunion, one of my classmates listed his occupation as a professional bridge player, another a tennis pro. One called himself a self-employed storyteller.

“Our class also includes Don Schollander, a West Coast kid who won four Olympic gold medals in swimming. He didn’t even wear a shirt.”

So there.

And finally: Denver Post columnist Woody Paige is not thrilled by Lawrence’s Taylor’s recent election to the Hall of Fame, writing: “Taylor is a Hall of Famer, but when I visit Canton, Ohio, I won’t stop to look at his or [O.J.] Simpson’s exhibitions.

“They have busts for being among the best football players and are complete busts for being among the worst human beings.”
