Emerald Bay, Smithcliffs Cove and Crescent Bay, closed last week after more than 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled into a storm drain that flows into the ocean, have been reopened, officials said.

The Orange County Health Care Agency’s environmental division closed half a mile of the beach for two days while workers cleaned up the sewage discharge. Water quality is now at acceptable standards, agency spokesman Larry Honeybourne said. He added that the spill was caused by a private sewage pump station that stopped working.
