A masked gunman entered a Ventura accounting firm Saturday afternoon and robbed two employees of their purses, police said.

The robbery occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. in an office suite in the 2200 block of Sperry Avenue, officers said.

Carol Sirott, 51, and Nancy Long, 52, were working when the robber walked in through the front door, displayed a handgun and demanded to know where the safe was, Ventura Police Lt. Gary McCaskill said.

When the robber found out there was no safe, he forced the women into a closet and stole their purses. After he left, the women called police.

It was unclear whether the robber--described as Latino, 5-feet-5 and having a medium build--fled on foot or in a car. Officers searched the streets surrounding the business for more than an hour but made no arrest.
