Interamericana Soccer, an independent soccer league of Latino players, wants out of the city’s penalty box for a stabbing that occurred at one of its games in October. The city revoked the group’s permit to play at Balearic soccer fields after an investigation into the incident and other serious violations. Edgar Vasquez, president of the league, said the group would like a second chance.

The league also has several alcohol violations, and it violated its permit by playing outside the hours that were allowed, police said, adding that more serious violations by players include brandishing a weapon and assault with a deadly weapon. The group also is responsible for littering and complaints to the city from neighbors, officials said.

But Vasquez said the league has made an effort to weed out the bad elements, and officials have established rules that could lead to players being kicked out of the league for inappropriate behavior. Vasquez said the group--which boasts nearly 4,000 members, 80% of whom are from Costa Mesa--has been forced to play in other cities. The group is running a signature drive and plans to appeal to the Parks, Recreation Facilities and Parkways Commission next month.
