SEASON AT A GLANCE: After placing fifth at 145 pounds last season at the Southern Section Masters meet, Garfinkel failed to medal at the state finals in Stockton. Competing this season at 160 pounds, Garfinkel has lost only once in 41 bouts and has recorded 27 pins. He is among the region’s top contenders for a state title in March.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Garfinkel won his 10 bouts to place first at the Highland dual meet tournament. Garfinkel’s pin of El Camino Real’s Eugene Korchmarev in 1:34 in his final bout raised his four-year career total to 123 pins, tying a state record.

Mari Myllykoski

SPORT: Basketball

YEAR: Senior

SEASON AT A GLANCE: Myllykoski, a foreign-exchange student from Finland, leads Royal with a 16.5 scoring average. Her scoring has been particularly helpful in the last three games because teammate Kristin Galbreath has been sidelined because of a broken hand.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Myllykoski helped Royal to victories in its first two Marmonte League games. She had season highs of 30 points and 14 rebounds in a 67-55 victory over Newbury Park and she scored 16 points in a 59-46 victory over Agoura. She had 10 points, making all six of her free throws, in the fourth quarter against Agoura.
