Jan Breslauer’s bright piece on playwright-actress Ellen McLaughlin opened my heart as if heaven sent (“Up in the Air,” Jan. 10). Tony Kushner’s testament to McLaughlin read like poetry. Robert Gauthier’s translucent photo emitted “the soaring above and running away” that Breslauer suggested flight suggests. Every pilot I know attests to a measure of both.

McLaughlin’s own words revealed an inner beauty and bear repeating: “The more you head into the maelstrom, the more vulnerable you are, of course. But it’s what you owe to whatever gift you have.”
