Preliminary tests at the former gun range in Huntington Central Park have determined that lead contamination in the soil used as a backstop for bullets is too high and the dirt must be treated as hazardous waste.

City staff is preparing a cleanup plan, which will be submitted to the Orange County Health Care Agency’s environmental health services unit, the county’s Public Facilities and Resources Department, the state’s Regional Water Quality Control Board and the state’s Toxic Substances Control Department. The cleanup cost will be determined after these agencies approve an action plan.
