Man Held for Mental Evaluation After Standoff
A man described by police as mentally disturbed held officers at bay for more than five hours Monday until the standoff ended without violence when SWAT team members tossed a nonlethal explosive device into the dwelling.
The 80-year-old resident reportedly telephoned police about 3 p.m. Monday, saying there was a body in the house, in the 19600 block of Sylvan Street. Police said that when they arrived, the man greeted them at the door with a handgun.
SWAT team members arrived about 5 p.m. and the stalemate ended at 8:40 p.m., said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.
Neighbors reported that the man came out of the house after police tossed in a flash-bang grenade, designed to startle without doing harm. The man will be held for 72 hours for mental evaluation, Lee said.
