New Weather Station Is Unveiled at USC
A new, technologically advanced weather station that provides minute-by-minute information was officially commissioned Wednesday at its new location at USC.
The Automated Surface Observing System has become the official National Weather Service source for downtown weather, moving from a previous location at the top of the Department of Water and Power building, three miles away.
“The more accurate [weather] measurement is on the ground because people live on the ground,” said Gary Ryan, meteorologist at the National Weather Service.
The new facility cost the federal agency $200,000 for instrumentation and installation. However, the National Weather Service was able to get use of the approximately one quarter of an acre piece of land at USC at no charge. The university will use the weather information to control temperature and humidity in campus buildings and irrigation systems.
There are about 900 such stations installed nationally, 19 in Los Angeles County.
