6 Cuban Refugees Freed After Protests

U.S. immigration authorities released six Cuban boat people who grappled with Coast Guard pursuers off a Florida beach in front of television cameras. The release, coming after angry protests by Cuban Americans, set off celebrations by Cuban exiles in Miami. Dozens of protesters had maintained a daylong vigil outside an immigration detention center in the Everglades, west of Miami. “INS authorities are convinced these six individuals pose no threat to the community,” INS spokesman John Shallman said.
