Army, Rebel Deaths Reported in Clash
Hundreds of soldiers and leftist rebels clashed in mountains south of Bogota, Colombia’s capital, and the guerrillas said as many as 40 soldiers were killed. The fierce fighting took place near Gutierrez. Army officials refused to provide a death toll for the troops but said at least 38 rebels were killed. About 500 rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, were battling about 600 soldiers. The army said FARC was trying to show its strength before upcoming peace talks while attempting to seize one of the main highways connecting Bogota to southern Colombia.
