Fernando Vargas, the International Boxing Federation junior-middleweight champion, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of burglary in Santa Barbara County.

Vargas was among five people arrested in the Summerland area after they allegedly broke into a house about 5 a.m. and assaulted a victim with a deadly weapon.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Vargas of Oxnard on suspicion of several charges, including burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and assault with a deadly weapon. Vargas, 21, was released on $10,000 bail. The victim had moderate injuries but did not require hospitalization, according to deputies. Vargas retained his title a week ago in Lake Tahoe, getting an 11th-round technical-knockout victory over Raul Marquez.
