Saving Murals

Re “Distinctive L.A. Art Legacy Under Siege,” July 23: I want to commend your coverage of this desecration of important and vital art. In this city of all cities, it seems to me there is a need for public unifying symbols. Our urban sprawl and ghettoizing make that difficult. Art and beauty are the ideal media for achieving some measure of cultural understanding and appreciation. Mural art, so publicly displayed, gives it the exposure to bring about a living immediacy.

I deplore the destruction of such art and want to add my voice to encourage L.A. authorities to see that the work is preserved.

I would like to see all these murals disappear; they are terrible. Why must we have this terrible work forced on us? It used to be you would have to go to a museum to see terrible art. Now it slaps us in the face everywhere we go. Everyone is an artist. Everyone has a statement.
