DIVISION I

No. 3 Corona del Mar (21-1) vs. No. 4 Woodbridge (18-4)

3:15 TODAY PALISADES TENNIS CLUB

Third-seeded Corona del Mar is favored to win its first Southern Section title in 16 years. But the Sea Kings aren’t the overwhelming favorite they might have been two months ago. In early April, they defeated Woodbridge, 17-1. But the second meeting was much closer, 11-7. In that match, Woodbridge’s No. 1 player, David Lingman, lost two of three sets. But Lingman has been playing his best tennis of the year. In Woodbridge’s 10-8 semifinal victory over Los Alamitos, Lingman swept--handing Cody Jackson only his second loss and Drew Hoskins his first loss. Lingman will probably have to sweep again for Woodbridge to have any shot of pulling off the upset. But a sweep will be difficult as Corona del Mar’s Parker Collins is also coming off a sweep of his Palos Verdes Peninsula opponents in the semifinals. Collins, who is nursing a sore back, was beaten by Lingman in a dual match and in the Sea View League finals. Woodbridge is trying to win its third Division I title in the last four years. Corona del Mar lost in last year’s final to Peninsula on games.
