L.A. Has Big Presence at Golf Championships

The City Section will be represented well at the state golf championships Tuesday at the SCGA Members’ Club in Murrieta.

Ed Turner, Chris Whitaker, Tye Alexander, Marcus Player, Bo Kim and Jake Sugarman of City champion Palisades will compete in the team and individual competition.

Other individual qualifiers are Scott Bashin and Keith Romar of Van Nuys Birmingham; Doo Kang and Jim Trani of San Pedro; Jim Camping and Ken Eda of University; Gavin Witzer of Westchester; Tom Mansuwan of Woodland Hills El Camino Real; Brett Potter of Chatsworth; and Glenn Wright of North Hills Monroe.

There is no girls’ team tournament, but six qualifiers from City schools will compete for the individual title: City champion Julie Park and runner-up Saki Uechi of Granada Hills; HeeYoung Cho of Marshall; Joi Hunt and Tierra Manigault of Westchester and Stacy Low of Van Nuys Grant.

Rob Nielson of Palisades and Mike Gledhill of Woodland Hills Taft were selected co-players of the year in boys’ volleyball.

Juan Chavez of Garfield, Brandon Brown and Bryan Capper of Taft, Mike Aleman of Granada Hills, Andrew Choy of Kennedy, David Lurth of Chatsworth and Jose Sanchez and James Taruc of Monroe were also chosen All-City.

An all-star football game pitting seniors from City schools against their counterparts from Los Angeles County Southern Section schools will be played June 19 at Santa Monica College at 7 p.m.

Ninety players will take part in the “Gridiron War,” the brainchild of New York Jet wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who is sponsoring the game with a shoe company and other NFL players.

Dorsey Coach Paul Knox and his staff will coach the City team. Santa Monica St. Monica Coach Norm Lacy and his staff will coach the Southern Section.

Charles Drake of Westchester, Ramon Ochoa of Bell and Asa Taylor and Jamaar Isom of Dorsey are some of the players who will participate.
