Window Dressings Draped in Savings

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A former bank building in Sherman Oaks contains one of the largest collections of window-covering fabrics in the San Fernando Valley with about a half-million yards at prices considerably below retail.

There’s such a huge inventory at Stern’s Draperies that one is a bit overwhelmed at first, but the specials will catch your eye within a few minutes. Consumers on the prowl for high-end fabrics will spot the washed chenilles that sell elsewhere for $65-plus marked at $45.

In business for 49 years (formerly in the downtown area), Stern’s is a family operation carried on by the founder’s grandson, Kevin Stern, who makes house calls after hours to measure and give estimates. When it comes to installation, their expert has more than 30 years of experience.

Stern’s does soft-window treatments so popular now, such as Roman shades and cloud and balloon shades, as well as valances, cornices, tabs and, of course, draperies of all kinds.

Sometimes it’s difficult to get someone to come to your home and give estimates, and some places charge. But it’s free at Stern’s, where estimates almost always come in lower than at other stores. One recent job that Stern’s completed for $700 was estimated by a major chain for $1,450--same windows, same fabric, same treatment. So it obviously pays to let them come out and give your window requirements a look.

The fabric choices are extensive. An imported voile, 118 inches wide, that retails for $16 is tagged at $7. Imported and domestic damasks start at $10 a yard, and there’s a large selection of cotton prints, velvets, tapestries and moires for $6 a yard, usually around $14 at other sources.

There is also a good selection of washed fabrics, 62 inches wide and only $10 a yard, almost half of retail. These are particularly good for slipcovers and upholstery, which Stern’s offers at competitive prices, though they are not quite the dazzling bargains the window coverings are.

All fabrics are first quality and purchased directly from the mills. Stern’s many years in the industry contribute to close associations with manufacturers and subsequently, opportunities for good buys. You will also find a good selection of wrought-iron rods, brackets, rings and finials available in custom colors.

Stern’s Draperies, 13861 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (818) 789-3838.
