Paula Jones’ husband filed for divorce Monday from his wife of seven years, citing irreconcilable differences.

Stephen Jones also asked for joint legal and physical custody and joint visitation of the couple’s sons, Stephen, 6, and Preston, 2.

The couple separated in February, and the boys live with their mother in Cabot, Ark., according to the filing in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Jones acknowledged in March that she and her husband were living apart but said that they would be reunited in Arkansas and that their marriage wasn’t in jeopardy.

“It is now,” said Susan Carpenter-McMillan, Paula Jones’ friend and former advisor. Carpenter-McMillan declined to elaborate, adding only that “at this time, the boys will remain with her.”

The couple, who married in 1991, disagreed over strategy in her sexual harassment lawsuit against President Clinton, Paula Jones has said.

She and Clinton reached a settlement of $850,000 in November on her claim that he made an improper sexual advance to her in a Little Rock hotel room in 1991. Her share of the money came to $201,000, with the rest going to lawyers.

A message left with Stephen Jones’ lawyer, Lee Salisbury, was not immediately returned Monday.
