At its Tuesday night meeting the City Council will consider getting rid of a $30 permit fee for business owners who work from home. City code currently allows people to work out of their homes as long as they have a home occupation permit and the business does not create a neighborhood disturbance.

If the move is approved, the city would lose about $3,000 in revenue from the $30 permit, according to a city document. However, the lost revenue would be made up by the time saved if city officials no longer have to process home occupation permit applications.

City officials have proposed amending the zoning ordinance to eliminate the permit requirement, but keeping the criteria for operating a home business. The Planning Commission voted May 11 to recommend the City Council approve dropping the permit fee. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the council chambers on the plaza level of the Brea Civic & Cultural Center, 1 Civic Center Circle.
