Stanford Defeats Florida State, 10-6
OMAHA — Stanford defeated Florida State, 10-6, to join Miami as the only unbeaten teams in the College World Series. It was the 11th consecutive victory and 23rd in the last 24 games for the Cardinal.
Justin Wayne (10-1) gave up nine hits and five runs in 6 2/3 innings, but picked up the victory. The loss dropped Florida State (54-13) into the losers’ bracket.
The Cardinal (50-13) scored four runs in the second, three of them unearned. The big hit was a three-run double by Craig Thompson.
“That was probably the key to the ball game,” Florida State Coach Mike Martin said.
Stanford scored two more runs in the third. John Gall doubled, took third on Joe Borchard’s hit and scored on Josh Hochgesang’s sacrifice fly. Borchard scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 Stanford lead.
Florida State’s four-run seventh cut the lead to 8-5, but Stanford got single runs in the seventh and eighth. “I was pleased the way we came back after they scored those four runs,” Stanford Coach Mark Marquess said.
