The city will ask the state Legislature for funds to pay for the additional costs incurred under new regulations on animal shelters and animal control agencies. A bill signed in December 1998 by former Gov. Pete Wilson places new responsibilities on facilities in terms of length of stay, veterinary services and record keeping. Although the city does not have an estimate on its cost increases, other cities of similar size have estimated increases of $8,000 to $10,000, Councilman Shawn Boyd said. The council recently agreed with Boyd’s plan to draft a letter to its Assembly and Senate representatives requesting reimbursement.
