New Rules Set for Special Prosecutors
Atty. Gen. Janet Reno said the Justice Department will be ready to handle appointing special prosecutors to investigate misconduct by high government officials when the independent counsel law expires next week. Reno said the department is nearly finished crafting rules it will follow in naming special investigators. Under the new rules, the attorney general would appoint a special prosecutor when it is determined that the investigation of a top government official presents a conflict of interest for the department.
